Titicaca - The Balsas Boat Race

For print [TIFF, 651 kb]

Balsas de totora, boats fashioned of bundles of dried reeds, of the Los Uros people are unique to Lake Titicaca and known worldwide. In this film, Joze Cajzek shows the first, and to this day, the only international Balsas competition, which he set up himself. Before the competition, he had trained on Slovenian water, but was using a real 'Titicaca' boat, which he had brought home a few years earlier. This film also portrays the present and the past of Peru, Lake Titicaca and the Andes.

Joze Cajzek

Joze Cajzek, born in 1964, an engine driver by trade, is involved in paragliding and alpinism. He had always been trying to somehow join the two sports and, later, he succeeded; this helped him in discovery and exploration of new places and in bringing people from around the world together. He paraglided in the Polish Tatra Mountains, over the slopes of Sahara and twice beneath the Himalayan tops. After setting up three expeditions to Peru, he now continues with exploration of the Cordilleras.
